Linking Athens to Western Peloponnese
Olympia Odos is the concessionaire of the highway connecting the western outskirts of Athens to Pyrgos, in the western Peloponnese. Running along the Gulf of Corinth and serving Patras, Greece’s main western gateway, it forms a strategic freight corridor while supporting tourism and regional growth, including access to Ancient Olympia. VINCI Highways operates within the concession company alongside its Greek partners.
Key Facts
- Traffic-risk concession contract with the Greek State
- Around 60 million toll transactions per year
- The largest highway solar plant in Europe
- First fully LED highway in Greece
- Adaptive lighting with AI
Transformative construction works
A major modernisation and extension programme was first completed in 2017, significantly enhancing safety and travel times between Athens and Patras. In 2022, a new phase began with the Patras–Pyrgos section. This extension brought Olympia Odos to 277 km, making it the third-longest highway in Greece.
A highway that produces its own energy
Olympia Odos hosts a pioneering 10 MWp solar programme within the highway right-of-way, including toll canopies, parking shelters and technical buildings. Commissioned in 2024 in the presence of the Greek Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, the programme fully covers the electricity needs of operations on the Athens–Patras section. It was financed and delivered in less than two years under the concession agreement.
Setting technological benchmarks
Olympia Odos has repeatedly pioneered new highway technologies. It was the first in Greece to deploy adaptive lighting powered by artificial intelligence, adjusting brightness in real time to traffic and weather conditions. It also led the transition to a fully LED network and introduced smart tunnel systems combining advanced monitoring and predictive maintenance across the many tunnels of the Athens–Patras axis.
A smart way to travel
Service quality is embedded across the corridor. Service areas reflect local identity and showcase regional products. A secure truck-dedicated area offers tailored facilities for freight drivers. Extensive EV charging and water-from-air systems enhance comfort and sustainability.
